Kew Media Distribution Lands International Sales Rights for Slate of New Films to be Introduced at EFM in Berlin

Leading global distributor Kew Media Distribution, part of Kew Media Group, has picked up a diverse slate of hot film projects that will be introduced at the upcoming European Film Market (EFM), with Kew representing international sales rights. Feature films added to the Kew slate are Rodney Ascher’s documentary A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX; neo-noir psychological thriller RATTLESNAKES; rock documentary SUZI Q; and the elevated horror thriller ITSY BITSY.

The films join a slate that includes a pair of the most buzzworthy films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival – LEAVING NEVERLAND, a two-part documentary featuring two men who recount their experiences of being sexually abused by Michael Jackson, and Nick Broomfield’s documentary MARIANNE & LEONARD – WORDS OF LOVE, a beautiful yet tragic love story between Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse Marianne Ihlen.

Jonathan Ford, EVP of Sales, at Kew Media Distribution said, “Heading into another major film market, we’re tasked with not only increasing the volume of projects to meet the massive global demand for content, but to introduce films exhibiting a quality standard that exceeds the continually rising bar. Films and documentaries remain a global experience that can be shared even more so today, and the type of content we’re introducing in Berlin all have components of universality in one form or another.”

About the Films

A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX is Rodney Ascher’s newest documentary film venture. Exploring the idea of Simulation Theory, the metaphysical documentary showcases the stories of real people and moments in their lives when they must question if they are living in the real world, or a computer simulation.

Influenced by the late author Philip K. Dick, who offered up the idea of a computer programmed reality which inspired such films as Blade Runner, Total Recall, and Minority Report, the movie’s aim is, much like Ascher’s previous work, to bring unique, shared experiences and ideas to life. A Campfire Production, A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX is produced by Ross Dinerstein (Stephen King’s 1922, The Pact, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, The Nightmare) with Rebecca Evans and Ross Girard serving as executive producers.

A neo-noir psychological thriller adapted from the acclaimed stage-play, award winning writer/director Julius Amedume’s RATTLESNAKES tells the story of California life guru and family man Robert McQueen and stars Jimmy Jean-Louis (Claws, Monster-in-Law, Heroes), Robinne Lee (Hitch, Fifty Shades Darker, Fifty Shades Freed) and Jack Coleman (Dynasty, Heroes).

What begins as a typical day of client meetings and therapy sessions takes a turn for the worse…

He’s expecting to meet a regular client in a rented apartment, but instead he’s ambushed by three masked men and held hostage. McQueen is accused of sleeping with each man’s wife. He pleads his innocence, but faced with being beaten and tortured, what he reveals will change all of their lives forever – but will it be enough to save his?

Julius Amedume (Precipice, A Goat’s Tail) directed the film and wrote the screenplay. Jimmy Jean-Louis produced the film. Nik Powell (Brimstone, The Crying Game) executive produced. RATTLESNAKES is a Jet Media Production in conjunction with Hollywood Entertainment Productions and Scala Productions.

SUZI Q is the definitive, unexpurgated story of the girl from Detroit City who redefined the role and image of women in rock ‘n’ roll when she broke out around the world in 1973. The trailblazer and inspiration for a generation of female rock musicians who followed her, SUZI Q reminds contemporary audiences of her pioneering influence, white-hot talent and string of incandescent pop-rock hits. Testimony is duly made by a host of rock luminaries, with focus on the women who followed the roadmap Suzi charted for them. Exiled to Europe during her success yet now largely forgotten in her homeland, we return with Suzi to Detroit. Exploring the long simmering family tensions and sibling rivalries that result from the success of one family member, we reveal the price paid for success in a deeply personal exploration of fame, ambition and resilience.

Still on the road after 50 years, Suzi Quatro surely is The Queen of Rock’n’Roll. Accept no substitutes.

Directed by Liam Firmager (King of the Mountain) and produced by Tait Brady (Brothers’ Nest), the film features Suzi Quatro, Alice Cooper, Deborah Harry (Blondie), Joan Jett, Cherie Currie (The Runaways), Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads), Donita Sparks (L7), Henry Winkler, Mike Chapman, Wendy James (Transvision Vamp), Kathy Valentine (The Go-Go’s), KT Tunstall, Dave Neal (Suzi Quatro band), Chris Franz (Talking Heads), Andy Scott (The Sweet), Don Powell (Slade), Len Tuckey, Lita Ford (The Runaways), Toby Mamis, Clem Burke (Blondie), Sir Tim Rice, Bill Harry, John Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), Patti Quatro, Nancy Quatro and Michael Quatro.

From acclaimed filmmaker Micah Gallo (Wick - short) alongside special effects master Dan Rebert (True Blood), ITSY BITSY weaves a character-driven story of responsibility, love and loss set against a terrifying backdrop of chilling scares and monstrous legends.

The film stars Golden Globe®-winner Bruce Davison (Longtime Companion, X-Men), Elizabeth Roberts (Old Fashioned, CSI), Chloe Perrin (Mary, Single Parents), Arman Darbo (And Then I Go, Kung Fu Hero), Denise Crosby (Pet Sematary, Star Trek: The Next Generation), Eileen Dietz (Abnormal Attraction, Halloween II), Matty Cardarople (Stranger Things, A Series of Unfortunate Events), Treva Etienne (Black Hawk Down) and Doua Moua (Mulan, Veep).

When Kara (Elizabeth Ann Roberts), a single mother struggling to raise two children in New York City, receives a job offer to work as a private nurse in the mid-West, it’s an opportunity she can’t refuse. So she uproots her family, moving them to the remote farm owned by Walter (Bruce Davison), a semi-retired antiquities appraiser who has multiple sclerosis.

At first, things seem normal enough. But what Kara doesn’t know is that doom preceded their arrival in the form of a mysterious ancient relic. And, if her family are to survive the horrific nightmare now lurking in the shadows, they will need to confront their deepest fears and personal demons.

Executive Producers are Brandon K. Hogan (Come Hell or High Water), Cory Neal (Hatchet, Frozen), Jonathan Helmuth, Geno Tazioli (Cell, The Quiet Ones) and Adam W. Rosen (The Lazarus Project, Rescue Dawn).

Channel 4 and HBO co-produced award-winning director Dan Reed’s LEAVING NEVERLAND, a two-part documentary featuring two men who recount their experiences of being sexually abused by Michael Jackson.

When allegations of abuse by Jackson involving young boys surfaced in 1993, many found it hard to believe that he could be guilty of such unspeakable acts. The film explores the experiences of two young boys, James Safechuck, at age ten, and Wade Robson, at age seven, who were both befriended by Jackson. They and their families were entranced by the singer’s fairy-tale existence as his career reached its peak.

Through gut-wrenching interviews with Safechuck and Robson, now in their 30s, as well as their mothers, wives and siblings, LEAVING NEVERLAND crafts a portrait of sustained abuse, and explores the complicated feelings that led both men to confront their experiences after both had a young son of their own. Playing out against the backdrop of our collective experience, the film documents the value of breaking silence, even when it implicates a powerful and revered figure. The project was commissioned by HBO’s Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller and Channel 4’s  Tom Porter. The two-part series is made by AMOS Pictures and directed by Dan Reed and will premiere on HBO and Channel 4 this spring.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Nick Broomfield (Whitney ‘Can I Be Me’, Kurt & Courtney), MARIANNE & LEONARD – WORDS OF LOVE is a story of enduring love between Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse Marianne Ihlen. The film follows their relationship from the early days in Greece, a time of ‘free love’ and open marriage, to how their love evolved when Leonard became a successful musician.

Broomfield produced the film through his Lafayette Films production banner with Marc Hoeferlin, Shani Hinton and Kyle Gibbon.

In addition to these new titles, Kew Media Distribution’s impressive international slate includes the drama AGATHA AND THE TRUTH OF MURDER; CHAKA KHAN: KEEP ON HOLDIN’ ON - a fascinating story detailing 10-time Grammy® Award winner Chaka Khan’s time as a civil rights activist and member of the Black Panther movement; the hot button documentary DIVIDE AND CONQUER: THE STORY OF ROGER AILES; and a documentary on music icon Prince - MR NELSON: ON THE NORTH SIDE, among several others.
